Mr. Santhosh Prakash, Product Manager, Mapei Construction Products India Private Limited, shares his Company’s plans of operations in India, market share and important projects handled in an interview with CE&CR. CE&CR: What are the products manufactured by the Company, and in what sectors are they used in India?
Santhosh Prakash:
In the waterproofing segment, Mapei has the full range of products right from the low-end Latex SBR to high end Polyurea and PU, along with different kinds of membranes.

The leading product of waterproofing of Mapei is modified cementitious product called Mapelastic and Mapelastic Smart. Most of the products in the Mapei range are all manufactured locally and well accepted in the construction segments covering from Residential to Industrial to Infrastructure and specialised tunnels for Railway, Road and others.
CE&CR: What is the share of Mapei products in the Indian market? What is the plan for the expansion of the Company in India?
SP:
Mapei India is just 7 years old, even though Mapei SpA is 81 years old in its existence. The CAGR of Mapei India during the 7 years is more than 85% and it is expected to continue its growth in the coming years. Waterproofing plays a major role in this growth history and future prospect.
CE&CR: Please share your experience of Execution of Waterproofing works in any benchmark project in India.
S.P:
During this short period of time, Mapei India Waterproofing division has covered many important waterproofing structures which include:
- One massive world class temple being built in West Bengal - Number of special tunnels where bone dry situation is demanded by the owner of the project, apart from numerous number of large commercial and residential structures across the country.

CE&CR: How has the Waterproofing Technology reflected in India after government’s “Make In India” Initiative?
S.P:
The impacts of government’s “Make in India” initiative has not been reflected directly yet in the waterproofing segment. However, the “Make in India” initiative has attracted many international consulting firms, construction firms and other industries, which in turn have shown interest for better products and better systems of waterproofing of international standard, which indirectly helping the Waterproofing segment to adopt better solutions.
CE&CR: Tell us about your manufacturing facility and distribution network.
S.P:
Presently, we have two factories i.e., one in South and one in West, having one more warehouse in Mumbai. Our sales network covers the entire length and breadth of the country providing active technical support to all the projects. We are also covering interesting waterproofing projects in Sri Lanka and Maldives.
CE&CR: What is the latest innovation in your R&D section?
S.P:
Mapei is well known for its R&D as it uses 5% of its world turnover, every year in R&D. As a result, Mapei go on introducing new products with value addition to the customer at regular intervals. Presently, there are a few such projects going on which, however, can be announced only after these are officially launched by Mapei SpA.
