Vikash Anand, Senior General Manager, Road Surfacing SBU, STP Limited, shares his view on the various products from STP Limited, which are used in road making, repairing, and painting, in an interview with Civil Engineering and Construction Review.
Civil Engineering and Construction Review: What are the STP chemicals used in making and repairing of concrete roads? What are their advantages?
Vikash Anand: Starting from Admixtures both types i.e. SNF and PC based, we have complete range of curing compounds, sealants of all types, Grouts, Segmental Bonding, Shuttering Oil, Protective coatings, Road marking Paints and APP Membranes for Construction of new Roads. We have products for repair of PQC Roads i.e. Shalipatch EC for cracks and Potholes repair. All major STP products are accredited by IRC and tested by various independent laboratories for their performance and specifications. STP is having more than 80 years of experience of dealing in these product lines, backed by strong R&D and a team of industry professionals. CE&CR: What are the STP chemicals used in making and repairing of flexible roads? What are their advantages?
Vikash Anand: STP Limited has products starting from Bitumen Emulsions, Modified Bitumen, Bitumen Cutback, Industrial Bitumen and Emulsions for Cold Mixes for construction of Flexible Roads. We have Shalipatch, Bituminous Ready mix for Pothole repairs & Shaliseal RSTC for waterproofing of roads. We have Bitumen Emulsions specially formulated for fog seal and crack sealing applications. We also have Polymerized Bitumen Emulsion for Microsurfacing, Fog Seal application. Again, these products are developed by R&D facility of the STP Limited, accredited by IRC, tried and tested by various independent laboratories and major infrastructure companies for their various NHAI and other major projects.
CE&CR: What are the STP chemicals used for painting roads? What are their advantages?
Vikash Anand: STP Limited has Road Marking paints for marking of Roads. STP Limited is introducer of thermoplastic paints in INDIA. We have complete range of Thermoplastic paints with us. We also have Cold Applied acrylic based paints for Road Markings. We also have Coloured Asphalt and product Acrylate based coloured Slurry seal for Aesthetic and special applications. When applied properly these products gives a great look to the Flexible roads and ensure safety of commuters. All products are accredited by IRC and developed by the R&D team of STP limited. These products are tried and tested by different stakeholders in the industry for their superlative performance. CE&CR: What methodology should be used to apply these chemicals in road repairs? What should be kept in mind in cleaning and maintenance of tools?
Vikash Anand: While applying these chemicals in Road repairs, it is essential to follow the manufacturer guidelines given for each product. Proper tools shall be used for different applications. All the tools shall be clean while starting the application and shall be cleaned properly after the application. Water, Soap, detergents and solvents shall be used as per manufacturer guideline for cleaning of equipments. STP Limited also provides technical support to their customers for application of these products.
CE&CR: What are the health and safety aspects that should be observed while using the road chemicals? What precautionary issues that should be considered while handling and using the chemicals? How should the chemicals be stored?
Vikash Anand: Road Safety signs and equipments shall be used before application of these products on roads. While handling these products one should wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye protection. Tools shall be cleaned before and after the application. Any contact with SKIN & Eyes shall be avoided completely. Proper ventilation shall be there, and one should avoid the vapour inhalation.
CE&CR: What are the hazards caused while handling the chemicals? How do we identify the hazards? What are the first-aid measures that should be applied to the affected person?
Vikash Anand: Irritation may occur if these chemicals come in contact with skin. In case of contact with skin, rinse with plenty of clean water. We should not use any chemical to clean the contacted area. In case of eye contact, wash immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice immediately. In case of swallowing, do not induce vomiting and medical advice shall be sought immediately.
