Ceramic Tiles For Home Improvement
Mcon Rasayan Pvt. Ltd.
Ceramic Tiles today have become an integral part of home improvement. It can make a huge difference to the way your interiors and outdoors look and express. The Indian tile industry, despite an overall slowdown of the economy continues to grow at a healthy 15% per annum.
Tile as a product segment has grown to a sizeable chunk today at approximately 680 Million Square metre production per annum. The main product segments are the Wall tile, Floor tile, Vitrified tile and Industrial tile segments. The market shares (in value terms) are 20%, 23% 50%, and 7% respectively for Wall, Floor, Vitrified, and Industrial tiles. Mcon Rasayan has a range of Tile adhesives, which suit the different types of tiles and different applications.
As you can see in the Statistics that Tiles is a very huge industry but at the same time it has been neglected in India. The major share of the Tiling industry is taken by the Vitrified tiles, which have very typical characteristics unlike the typical Mosaic tiles of the past.
The modern tiles have the following Characteristics:
- They usually have a lower water absorption rate
- They are thinner
- They are stronger, harder and more damage resistant
Due to these typical properties it’s important that the fixing technique and the adhesion material also needs to change. This is where the Modern day MCON Tile Adhesives step in. On the market today, there are dozens of tile adhesive types, which differ from each other depending on the application at hand. Here we will compare the Traditional approach of tiling vs. Mcon Tile Adhesive.
Tile Adhesive vs Sand and Cement Mortar
Sand Quality – Sand, which has been quarried for use in regular mortar is not graded for specific use as a tile adhesive, it’s often much too coarse for a perfect mix while Mcon make of Tile Adhesives are formulated using fine grain sand of a specified calibre.
Smoothness of the mix - When installing something delicate, such as a thin vitrified tile, what is required is a nice, even shallow bed of adhesive, which is given by Mcon Adhesives. A rough, grainy mix of adhesive would make this job extremely tricky, if not impossible. Building sand has been washed but still you have traces of dirt and debris. This can cause a problem when tiling something very absorbent, such as natural limestone, as the dirt can be drawn through the tile by osmosis and cause staining which is visible from the surface. Mcon Adhesives are water resistant in nature and hence don’t give those stains. Also, for light coloured stones Mcon has White adhesives.
It’s easy to handle bags of Mcon tile adhesive as it comes in convenient 20 kg packing. Everything that’s required is premixed in the correct ratios and packed in a bag that is easily managed. Its difficult to ensure exact ratios of sand cement in the site mixed mortars.
Bags of ordinary Portland Cement are usually large but may only be required for 20% of the mix. It’s often the case that a lot of cement would be left over at the end of the job, and then the opened bag would have to be dealt with.
Bags of sand are not very portable after opening. In case of MCON Tile Adhesives the quantity required per square meter is known in advance, so it’s not difficult to gauge how much is needed for any particular area – the rest can be left in the bag until needed.
Mcon Range of Tile adhesives are CE – European Standard Certified. They contain different quantities of certain ingredients, additives, and polymers, depending on the required situation. This means there is really no limit to the range of surfaces, which can be tiled over. This is not the case with sand and cement. There can be bonding issues especially when fitting tiles with a low absorbency or fixing tiles over old tiles.
A sand and cement mix is often applied to substrate, and then another dollop spread on the back of the tile with a thickness of 10 to 15 mm. Too thin, and there will be no bonding at all to either the tile or the substrate. With Mcon Tile Adhesive, a notched trowel is used, which saves a lot of material waste as even at a thickness of 4 mm to 5 mm it gives very high bond strength.
Waterproofing quality, the Mcon range of tile adhesives also come in waterproofing grade that is helpful when tiles are installed in wet areas such as shower, bathrooms or kitchens.
Mcon NSA Grey is used for tile on tile adhesion capability for fast works or renovation project where one cannot remove old tile or marble floor. These modern tile adhesives can be used to bond the tiles on the smooth surface.
The heat of hydration produced by Cement sand mortar sometimes leads to the bending of the thin Vitrified tiles. Mcon Tile Adhesives have a very low heat of hydration thus the finish of tiles is not disturbed.
The process of mixing sand and cement is time consuming, and dusty, and often needs to be done in a separate location. Also, if you want to use Sand and Cement mortar, tiles would be left to soak in water overnight. This all involves more labour as compared to using MCON Tile Adhesives.
The days of using a sand and cement-based mortar for installing tiles is gone. While it may seem low cost at the initial stage, but the reality is that these are outweighed heavily by the convenience, quality, versatility, and lower labour costs.
