Civil Engineering and Construction Review: What are the advantages and application methodology of using ShaliPatch EC 20?
Vikash Anand: ShaliPatch EC 20 is a product developed for repair of roads with outstanding performance. It can be used for both flexible as well as for rigid pavements. The product is designed in such a way that it causes minimum time hindrance to traffic. It is a rapid cure having high load bearing capacity, is tough, durable, and has flexibility. Also, ShaliPatch EC 20 has excellent resistance to chemicals, fuel and saltwater.
For repairing surface defects on the road using ShaliPatch EC 20, we need to prepare the surface by cleaning, and cutting it into proper geometric shape. The absence of standing water should be ensured. After surface preparation, we need to mix the components as advised by the technical data sheet and the mix can be poured into the prepared surface after application of primer ShaliPrime PUM. We should not install ShaliPatch EC 20 in the presence of any moisture and if the surface temperature is below 5°C.
CE&CR: What factors differentiate the ShaliPatch EC and ShaliPatch EC 20?
Vikash Anand: ShaliPatch EC 20 differentiates itself with ShaliPatch EC in terms of rapid curing time and ease of application. We can open traffic in a much quicker time when we use ShaliPatch EC 20 as compared to ShaliPatch EC.
CE&CR: What are the characteristics of STP’s industrial bitumen?
Vikash Anand: Industrial bitumen is derived from oxidation of straight-run bitumen obtained from refineries by oxidation process. A varied range of desired properties can be obtained through control oxidation process for wide range of application. STP industrial bitumen has characteristics like waterproofing, plasticity and resistance towards alkalis and acids. STP industrial Bitumen can also be used as an efficient electric insulator because of its excellent dielectric strength. Further, its use included water and chemical proof material in building floors and roofing, canal lining, embankment protection and sand stabilisation in Hydro Project, and SMA (Stone Matrix Asphalt) Construction in pavements.
CE&CR: How is modified bitumen better vis-à-vis straight-run bitumen?
Vikash Anand: Modified Bitumen is being produced with the help of polymers to achieve enhanced properties and better field performance as compared to bitumen. Modified bitumen will have better physical properties, i.e., softening point, viscosity, elastic recovery, modulus of rigidity as compared to normal bitumen. Using modified bitumen, life of flexible pavements can be enhanced, and overall maintenance expenses may also come down. It is advisable to go with modified bitumen while designing wearing coarse/bituminous concrete for flexible pavements to ensure an extended life.
CE&CR: What hazards can STP chemical products cause and what preventive measures should one take while using them?
Vikash Anand: Irritation may occur if these chemicals come in contact with skin. In case of contact with skin, rinse with plenty of clean water. We should not use any chemical to clean the contacted area. Further, in case of eye contact, wash immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice immediately. If the product is swallowed, do not induce vomiting and seek medical advice immediately.
