Allround Stair Tower
Layher has a full range of stairway solutions for temporary access, from simple internal access to stairway towers for public use, and a complete selection of other special application stairway solutions. Layher stairway towers are constructed utilizing standard Allround Scaffolding vertical standards, ledgers, diagonals and decks, and a few additional components such as stairway stringers, deck locking clamps and handrails. Also, stair towers have standard layouts of 10, 12 or 16 legs.

All Layher stairs meet U.S. safety regulations. Further, the stairways in connection with events must comply with the requirements of German regulations governing public assembly places. These regulations demand a reduced rise of 166 mm, a wider tread of 315 mm, and a load capacity of up to 7.5 kN/m2. The Layher stairway tower meets all these requirements.
The stairway stringer is designed for a standard height dimension of 150 cm. Separate stringers and standard decking ensure variable widths for the stairway (1.09 m, 1.57 m, 2.07 m). A height adjustment in the 0.5 m standard dimension is possible inside the tower; while outside the tower, any height adjustment required is possible.

The 16-standard design of the Allround stair tower is suitable for use with high live loads. In this case, the stairways are composed of individual stringers and series decks; this permits variable stairway flight widths of 1.09 m to 2.57 m. This design further permits, in the intermediate bays too, adjustment of the exit heights using short equalising stairways. Further, the modular design of stair tower, the weights and the volumes of the individual parts are low, assuring rapid and hence, economical assembly and dismantling as well as creating advantages for the logistics. The high proportion of standard Layher Allround Scaffolding material further contributes to high efficiency.

At 29 m tall and 57 m long, the Stairs offer an impressive landmark for ‘Rotterdam celebrates the city!’, and are a nod to 75 years of rebuilding Rotterdam. The temporary exhibition offers an impressive landmark for the cultural event ‘Rotterdam celebrates the city!’. The scaffolding responds to the angles of the Rotterdam Central Station, connecting the contemporary icon with a historic monument, whilst through its construction referencing the reconstruction that the city has experienced.
The arrival of the Stairs, a month long temporary installation celebrating 75 years of reconstruction in Rotterdam, follows the city’s tradition of celebrating reconstruction milestones. Large cultural events often provide beautiful vantage points, such as the Euromast, which was built for the Floriade in 1960 and the cable cars on the Coolsingel for the reconstruction event C70.

“Now they have created a new lookout where people can enjoy the unique views of this newly built city. From the cranes in the harbour to the new city centre, the North and Blijdorp Zoo, there is fun for everyone,” says Anouk Estourgie of ‘Rotterdam celebrates the city!’. “The Stairs aim to animate the rooftop and to imagine a second layer in the next step of Rotterdam’s urban planning. A second reconstruction, it would be good to make it a permanent fixture.”
Almost ten years ago, West 8 had created a temporary Stair made of scaffolding, leading onto the roof-top of Las Palmas, a striking historic building in Rotterdam; there are similarities between those Stairs and Layher’s Stairs. So we want to credit AdriaanGeuze, West 8 and DaF for this wonderful idea. The Layher’s design process started with the dream of a permanent escalator which then turned into a temporary project made of scaffolding. Dutch construction legislation then made the Stair into the current design. Even though Layher did not copy the stair design, they still want to express respect for the earlier project and its makers.
